Scared "Israelis" Cannot Invoke another May 17 Accord

Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa said the first outcome of the "Israeli" war against Lebanon in July 2006 was that formulating another "May 17" accord has become very difficult for the Zionist entity, knowing that the 2006 aggression left the "Israelis" scared that their entity might vanish.
On May 17, 1983, Lebanon nearly became the second Arab state to sign a peace deal with the "Israeli" entity when then Lebanese President Amin Gemayyel, represented by Antoine Fattal, signed the deal with the "Israelis"; a deal that was thwarted one year later by a popular uprising.
Speaking to Al-Manar TV late Wednesday, al-Sharaa stressed that the war gave hope to the Lebanese and made the "Israelis" perceive the new balance in the region: they will have to think a lot before waging any new war.
"The region is calm today, not a fabricated calm, but the calm that resulted from the failure of a huge US-"Israeli" scheme," al-Sharaa noted, praising the Hizbullah Islamic resistance victory in July 2006 that changed the whole picture.
"Lebanon's war produced new facts and gave hope to all Lebanese. After the war, the "Israelis" realized that it is no longer simple to think of invading Lebanon whenever they wanted to," he pointed out. Al-Sharaa put these facts in the framework of "raising the morale of the Lebanese, not only the resistance community but rather a great portion of the Lebanese population.
The Syrian VP concluded that it is not realistic to think the "Israeli" enemy is able to invoke any other May 17 accord. ""Israel", Washington's mighty tool in the region, has failed. It was defeated when it sought to invade Lebanon in July 2006," al-Sharaa recalled. He stressed "Israel's" defeat has raised big questions in "Israeli" circles. "They consider any statement, even from far way, that doubts "Israel's" existence or says that "Israel" can cease to exist one day, makes them panic. This panic did not exist before the 2006 war."
AL-SHARAA STRESSES NO SECRET TALKS ARE HELD WITH "ISRAEL"
In his interview with Al-Manar, Sharaa also denied allegations that Syria is holding secret and direct talks with "Israel". "No secret talks were held, neither covert nor overt talks," Sharaa said. He added that talks between "Israel" and Syria are only taking place in Turkey.
"When Turkish officials tell us that the "Israelis" vowed they were ready to continue negotiations in the framework of Land-for-Peace, UNSC resolutions and Madrid Conference, then it's normal for us to be honest with ourselves and accept," al-Sharaa clarified. "Such preliminary negotiations could turn into serious and direct only when we reach an unequivocal agreement on these bases."
'SYRIA WANTS MIDDLE EAST TO BE A NUCLEAR-FREE REGION'
Commenting on French President Nicolas Sarkozy's statements from the Zionist entity, the Syrian VP told Al-Manar that the latter sought to satisfy the "Israeli" public and therefore, he used some expressions to raise their morale.
Al-Sharaa held the US administration responsible of the "Israeli" raid against Syria in September 2007, stressing that there was a direct US involvement in the incident "after US officials advised "Israel" and gave it the green light." He revealed a US scheme against Syria, saying attempts to open the nuclear issue come in the framework of activating this plot.
Al-Sharaa said Syria wants the Middle East to be a nuclear-free region on condition that "Israel" also be subjected to monitoring and international inspections. He said Syria will employ certain "political and diplomatic" methods at the UN Security Council and with the IAEA to reach this goal.
