Jerusalem (al-Quds), "Israel" (AHN) - Residents of the northern "Israel" port city of Haifa were informed on Thursday that during last summer`s war against Lebanon`s Hizbullah, they were nearly the victims of a mass casualty incident.
Hundreds of missiles fired by Hizbullah slammed into Haifa and its suburbs during the 34-day conflict. But one came dangerously close causing a major catastrophe when it landed on the grounds of Haifa`s main oil refinery, which sits adjacent to its port facilities.
According to a security prospectus cleared for publication on Thursday, the missile landed in an open area inside the refinery complex, narrowly missing a storage tank containing deadly chemical substances.
Recalled one refinery worker who spoke to Ynet, "It was horrifying. We saw the rocket flying into the refinery and approaching a container holding tons of chemical substances."
Had the rocket hit the storage tank, the release of chemicals into a population of more than 500,000 could have killed hundreds.
During the war, Hizbullah retaliated with some 3,970 rockets at military installations and settler centers across northern "Israel".
