GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - The Hamas-led Palestinian government on Wednesday called for a prisoner swap with "Israel" to solve the Gaza crisis. It was the first time the government has proposed exchanging a captured "Israeli" soldier for prisoners held by "Israel".
In a statement, the Information Ministry said it is "natural logic" to carry out an exchange. "This has been exercised by previous "Israeli" governments with Hizbullah and the PLO, and this is what other countries do in conflict situations," the statement said.
Militant groups holding the soldier have made similar demands. "Israeli" Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has rejected the demands, calling for the unconditional request of the soldier.
