Al Akhbar Publishes Third Batch of Wikileaks Cables on July War
More of the cables were published on Thursday in Al Akhbar newspaper concerning the March 14 scandals on the Lebanon second war. The newspaper published parts of the cables, of which focus on three major issues: the first on March 14 on the first day of war saying they look like fools and on the Vodka night with (Terje Roed) Larsen, the second on Two FPM deputies describing the alliance with Hizbullah as a ‘mistake', and the third on (MP Jebran) Bassil supporting the resistance...
March 14 on the first day of July war: We Look Like Fools...Admiration for Sayyed Nasrallah and Frustration over His Smart Messages in July 2006
MP Jumblatt, MP Hamedeh: Sayyed Nasrallah Talented, Smart
In this context, Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt, in a phone call with the US embassy on July 12, expressed his admiration, and worry of (Hizbullah SG Sayyed Hassan) Nasrallah's talents and Hizbullah's capability to return each figure to his position. Jumblatt, according to the cable, assured that the developments (during that phase) are very confusing to the Seniora government and to the March 14 movement as well as to the Sunni powers in the region. Jumblatt further commented on Sayyed Nasrallah's plan, noting it is the fruit of smart planning and targets two important issues for Muslims: the Arab detainees in "Israeli" prisons and the deterioration of the situation in the Gaza Strip.
In another cable, Marwan Hamedeh told Feltman that he called Saad Hariri in Saudi Arabia and told him "do not return now, because you will be swamped in Quraitem by 20,000 refugees (displaced) begging for food". Hariri relayed the kindest regards from the Saudi leadership to Walid Jumblatt Later on, Hamedeh said Hariri was deceived by Hizbullah SG Sayyed Nasrallah, and that Gen. Michel Aoun was fooled too.
Concerning Hizbullah's missiles, Hamedeh said that the government and the Lebanese Army might demand to take the rockets and heavy arms from Hizbullah, noting that all the Lebanese carry light weapons, which is no big deal.
He further pointed out three options to solve the Hizbullah rockets issue: send them back to Iran and Syria, deliver them to the Lebanese army, or deliver them to an international force that in its turn maintains stability. Hamedeh expected Hizbullah will refuse the third option, and stated that the second option constitutes an embarrassment to the Lebanese army because it would have to train its personnel on the usage of the arms. Answering Feltman's question on the reason to why the Lebanese government has not disarmed Hizbullah yet according to international resolutions 1559 and 1680, Hamedeh said that UN res. 1559 was a blessing to Lebanon, but with UN res. 1680, March 14 committed a mistake by allowing Hizbullah to participate in the government.
Fares Soeid and Robert Ghanem: Hizbullah Not Only Abducted the 2 "Israeli" Soldiers, But Also the Lebanese Government!
Also, the cables revealed that on their part, MPs Fares Soeid and Robert Ghanem had their share in the US embassy gossips.
MP Robert Ghanem on his part considered the current (during the war) situation of the Seniora government as painful, also considered that (Hizbullah SGSayyed Hassan) Nasrallah not only abducted the two "Israeli' soldiers but also the Lebanese government. As for Fares Soeid, he expressed his frustration over the smart messages of (Sayyed Hassan) Nasrallah, noting that Sayyed Nasrallah through his speeches embarrassed the major Sunni regimes in the Arab world and demonstrated them as incapable and impotent before the Arab hopes and ambitions.
Vodka Night with Larsen: Jumblatt and Hamedeh Call on "Israel" to Invade Lebanon
In another cable that shed light on the international resolution 1559, Walid Jumblatt and Marwan Hamadeh were clearly concerned with "Israel's" ‘surgical bombardment', and hoped that it continues with it war until they inflict total destruction of Hizbullah's infrastructure, even if this required the occupation of South Lebanon. Jumblatt stressed that publicly he was going to call for a cease fire but that he sees in the continuation of hostilities an opportunity to destroy Hizbullah.
Jumblatt was not happy to see that "Israel" has not destroyed enough of Hizbullah's infrastructure and capabilities... and complained that a cease fire would give Hizbullah a victory. He frankly conveyed that he prefers the continuation of the hostilities.
Ambassador Feltman asked Jumblatt what does "Israel" needs to do to inflict maximum damage on Hizbullah: Jumblatt replied that "Israel" is fighting a conventional war ... What is needed is an invasion of south Lebanon, cleaning the area to allow the redeployment of the Lebanese Army Forces ... .Jumblatt concluded that there are only two possible outcomes: total victory or total defeat of Hizbullah.
After Jumblatt's departure, Larsen said he agrees on the idea of land invasion which might be positive. Again, Marwan Hamedeh reiterate that they (March 14) do not want the war to end because then "Hizbullah would stack more weapons in its stockpiles somewhere in the Bekaa valley. Jumblatt then, expressed his admiration to the smartness of the Iranians as they provided Hizbullah with anti-ship missile which was used to target the "Israeli" warship back then.
