New Yorkers Protest Stop-and-Frisk Policy
Thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets in a silent march, to protest against the controversial policy adopted by the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The Sunday demonstration, organized by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Action Network, several unions and community organizations, as well as Occupy Wall Street movement members, was launched at Harlem to Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, calling against the unfair treatment of dissents by the NYPD.
"We've got to fight back, we can't be silent" was the slogan heard throughout the protest. According to the New York Civil Liberties Union, the NYPD seized more than 685,000 people, up from 97,000 arrested a decade earlier. The union further notes that almost half of the arrested people were frisked, while around 10% were arrested.
Some officials in several US cities have been calling for the change of the stop-and-frisk policy, yet New York officials stated that this policy would be mended rather than stopped.
