Another 1,523 cases of the novel coronavirus were diagnosed in Pakistan on Wednesday, according to the Ministry of Health, the country's largest daily increase yet.

At least 24,073 cases of the virus have been confirmed in Pakistan, killing 564 people so far.

The spike in cases comes after the country recorded its highest number of coronavirus deaths in a single day on Tuesday in which a total of 40 people died from the coronavirus in Pakistan -- the country's highest single-day increase in deaths during the outbreak, according to the health ministry.

On Monday, Pakistan reported its largest daily increase in cases, with 1,315 new infections within 24 hours.

In a short address to the nation on Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that he plans to “ease restrictions” on the ongoing national lockdown to “help the economy and daily wage earners.”

Pakistan’s lockdown is scheduled to run through May 9.
