‘Israeli’ Supreme Court ordered a Thursday vote to elect a new speaker for the Knesset [‘Israeli’ Parliament] after Yuli Edelstein announced his resignation on Wednesday, allowing senior member Amir Peretz to lead the plenary.

The court decided late Wednesday night to hold the Thursday vote. Edelstein resigned to avoid a Wednesday vote for his replacement that was ordered by the Supreme Court, and previously refused to schedule a speakership vote until a new government had been formed.

Meanwhile, the Benny Gantz-led Blue and White party - which holds a slender parliamentary majority-bloc - are expected to vote in one of their Knesset members to replace Edelstein, the likely replacement being Blue and White MK Meir Cohen.
