US House Democratic leaders on Monday slapped US President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani with a subpoena to turn over Ukraine-related documents as part of an accelerating formal presidential impeachment probe.

The subpoena "compels you to produce the documents set forth in the accompanying schedule by October 15, 2019," wrote House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff and his Democratic associates.

The subpoena seeks all communications by Giuliani and three of his business associates related to Trump's alleged effort to pressure Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch politically-motivated investigations against Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

Trump's Ukraine call is now at the center of an impeachment drama, which Trump maintains is a "witch hunt" against him.

A former mayor of New York, Giuliani admitted on live television last week that as Trump's attorney he asked the government of Ukraine to target former vice president Biden, the chairmen said.

Giuliani, who has emerged as Trump's point man in the Ukraine scandal, acknowledged meeting with Zelensky aides in Spain, specifying that he met the aides "at the request of the State Department" and that he had the memos to prove it.
