International envoy to Syria al-Akhdar Ibrahimi on Wednesday "warmly welcomed" an agreement between the United States and Russia to pressure both sides in Syria to end the bloodshed.

Ibrahimi: Russia, US Agreement Very SignificantA statement from Ibrahimi's office hailed the US-Russian agreement as "the first hopeful news concerning that unhappy country in a very long time."
"The statements made in Moscow constitute a very significant first step forward. It is nevertheless only a first step," he added.

In parallel, he mentioned that "there is every reason to expect backing for the accord from the remaining UN Security Council permanent members."
"It is equally important that the entire region mobilizes in the support of the process," it added

This comes as Ibrahimi thought of resigning over the apparent absence of a political track to resolve the brutal civil war, a senior aide had told Agence France Presse.
In Moscow talks which stretched late into Tuesday, US Secretary of State John Kerry met first for more than two hours with President Vladimir Putin and then for a further three with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"We agreed that Russia and the United States will encourage both the Syria government and opposition groups to find a political solution," Lavrov told reporters at a concluding news conference that ended after midnight.
"Despite different points of view, committed partners can accomplish great things together when the world needs it," Kerry told reporters in Russia's capital. "And this is one of those moments."

Kerry said the international plan for a transition agreed to last year in Geneva must be the roadmap for peace.
"It should not be a forgotten communique of diplomacy," he said.

Ibrahimi, who took over from former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in August, lost the confidence with key Arab League members after handing the Syrian seat in the League to the opposition.

Ibrahimi disagreed with Qatar and Saudi Arabia's arming of the rebels.
