Iran Launches Jamaran - 2 Destroyer: Message of Power, Friendship

A senior Iranian military official revealed that his country Iran will launch another indigenous destroyer called Jamaran-3 next year in line with efforts to boost the country's naval capabilities.
The Deputy Head of the Industry and Research Institute of the Iranian Defense Ministry Mohammad Eslami said on Sunday that the Jamaran-3 destroyer will become operational by the end of the next Persian calendar year, which starts on March 21, 2013.
On Sunday, Iran launched the Jamaran-2 destroyer in the Caspian Sea near the northern port city of Bandar Anzali.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi and Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi attended the ceremony to launch the vessel.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the launch of operation of Iran's second Mowdge class destroyer, 'Jamaran 2', in the Caspian Sea waters conveys the message of peace and friendship to the neighboring and littoral states.
"The presence of the destroyer in the Caspian Sea is for strengthening friendship and brotherhood based on security for all and confrontation against the extremism of those who want to disturb the security of the nations and the region to strengthen the trend of drug trafficking, terrorism and extremism," Ahmadinejad confirmed.
He further highlighted that increasing cooperation and sympathy among the regional governments and nations as well as spread and promotion of peace and friendship are among the main goals behind the launching of Jamaran2 destroyer.
"I am sure that all the Caspian Sea littoral states are happy with the Iranian nation's scientific and industrial progress and assume it as a step in line with their own security," Ahmadinejad reiterated.
For his part, the defense minister clarified that the destroyer which has been designed and developed by Iranian experts uses the state-of-the-art navigation systems and domestically-made sophisticated defensive equipment.
"The destroyer which is the symbol of power and capability of the Iranian naval industry will join the Navy's subsurface fleet in the first half of the next Iranian year (March 21 - September 22) after undergoing final tests," he mentioned.
In parallel, Vahidi confirmed that Jamaran-2 destroyer symbolizes the country's defense industry prowess.
"Jamaran-2 represents the [Iranian] defense industry supremacy and proves the progress of [Iran's] Defense Ministry, especially its maritime industry," Brigadier General Vahidi stated.
The 1,420-ton destroyer is powered by a 20,000-horsepower engine with a speed of 30 knots and has the capability to carry helicopters, different surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, as well as advanced artillery and torpedo systems. It is also equipped with electronic war system.
