Al-Assad to Ibrahimi: Any Initiative to Be Based on Ending Terrorism

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad reiterated Sunday his country's support to "any sincere effort to find a political solution to the crisis, based on respect for Syrian sovereignty and rejecting foreign intervention."
As he received the international envoy to Syria, al-Akhdar Ibrahimi, al-Assad confirmed that "any proposal must be centered around the principle of halting terrorism and the requirements to achieve that through the commitment of the countries involved in supporting, arming and harboring the terrorists in Syria to stop these actions."
According to Syrian State Agency, SANA, the meeting between al-Assad and Ibrahimi tackled the developments in Syria and the efforts exerted by the UN envoy as well as the results of his latest tour in the region.
For his part, Ibrahimi described the meeting as "open and responsible as usual."
In parallel, he urged the two sides in Syria's conflict to declare unilateral truces for this week's Muslim holidays.
"I appeal to everyone to take a unilateral decision to cease hostilities on the occasion of Eid al-Adha and that this truce be respected from today or tomorrow," the UN envoy told reporters.
He further hoped that "if we achieve this ceasefire during the al-Adha holiday and maintain it, we can try and build on it."
"If it does not happen, then we will keep trying and we hope we can find another way to bring relief to the Syrian people," he stated.
Earlier, Ibrahimi held a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem.
