Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki called Monday for quick progress in resolving the conflict in Syria.

During talks with UN-Arab League peace envoy al-Akhdar Ibrahimi, Maliki reiterated calls for a "political solution" to the 19-month uprising.
"The prime minister warned of continuing conflict in Syria, and called for quick movement in order to maintain the lives of the Syrian brothers, and also to maintain the security and stability of the region," a statement from Maliki's office said.

Maliki Assures Iraq’s Support to Political Solution for Syrian Crisis According to Iraqi media outlets, Maliki assured that "Iraq backs all the efforts of the UN-Arab League envoy to Syria for the sake of reaching a political solution for the worsening crisis in Syria."
The Iraqi official called on all players in the Syrian crisis to realize the critic situation in Syria and its developments, also to cooperate and act responsibly to solve the crisis.
Ibrahimi, for his part, presented a preliminary vision for a solution which is in line with Iraq's vision proposed since the beginning, as it's based on ending violence and launching a political process that realizes an acceptable solution for the Syrian people that preserves their rights and legitimate ambitions.
According to sources, the two sides agreed to a number of steps that could form a "road map" to emerge from the crisis as soon as possible.
The Algerian diplomat met with officials in Saudi Arabia and Turkey last week, and was in Tehran before arriving in Baghdad on Monday.

Ibrahimi called earlier on Monday for a temporary ceasefire in Syria during the four-day Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday later this month.
