Turkish Alawites Demand Equality, Reject War on Syria
Hassan Tahrawi
The Alawite sect in Turkey poured into the streets and squares demanding the Justice and Development government to fulfill its commitment and promises.
Ten years ago, the ruling party vowed to end sectarian discrimination, achieve equality in rights and duties, and recognize the role of Alwaite's worship, named as "Gathering Homes."
In parallel, demonstrators chanted anti-war against Syria slogans and strongly criticized the policy of Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government. They also urged it to adopt a language of peace with its citizens and neighbors.
Some protesters also raised flag of the Syrian Arab Republic and banners that read: "We will neither be slaves of the Sultan nor soldiers for America."
The demonstration, held in the Turkish capital Ankara, was organized by the Alwaite Federation of Associations and Institutions.
The protest included tens of thousands of Turkish citizens and various representatives of political parties and civil organizations.
Meanwhile, a wide participation of the largest Turkish opposition party MPs, the Republican People, was recorded.
