Lavrov in AL’s Meeting: Syrian Opposition Groups Must Withdraw, Int’l Community Shouldn’t Blame One Side
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called Saturday for an immediate halt to the violence in Syria, saying his government would work towards promoting reform in the country.
During an Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo, Lavrov urged on armed opposition groups to "withdraw from cities," and called on "the Syrian government to agree on a mechanism to allow humanitarian assistance."
The head of Moscow's diplomacy stressed that "his country was ready to work with anyone seeking reform in Syria, but that the international community should not blame only one side for the violence."
"The immediate mission now is to halt violence and enable humanitarian assistance to reach those in need in Syria," he confirmed.
Noting that "Russia is not trying to protect the Syrian regime," Lavrov asserted that "it is rather keen on protecting international law and promoting a peaceful resolution to Syria's crisis."
Earlier in the day, the Russian Foreign Minister warned "against any blatant interference in Syria's domestic affairs," affirming that "the rules of the international law mustn't be violated."
In a statement issued Saturday, Lavrov unveiled that "during his meeting with UN Secretary General's Special Envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, Lavrov affirmed the need for both an immediate halt of violence and a long-term settlement of the crisis through a wide national dialogue."
He further underlined Russia's support to Annan's mission, wishing him success in implementing it according to the terms of authorization granted to him.
