White House Funds NYPD on Muslim Surveillance
The Associated Press (AP) revealed in a report on Monday, that the White House funded the New York Police Department (NYPD) officers who conducted surveillances on Muslim neighborhoods, and stored detailed information about Muslim college students, mosque sermons, and Muslim social events.
The [Barack] Obama administration claimed on Monday that is has "no control" what so ever on how the NYPD spends the millions of dollars granted by the While House, spokesman Jay Carney affirmed.
Also, the AP report added that the initial intention of the White House grant was to help "law reinforcement fight drug crimes", yet it was exploited to violated freedom of religion laws.
This program to fund the anti-drug activities in New York and New Jersey was launched at the peak of the drug war through the "High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area" (HIDTA) program, which handed the money to the NYPD and had very little oversight on the Muslim surveillance issue.
In this regard, the AP revelations were through gaining access to secret police documents and interview with current and former federal officials.
On this level, although the money was granted by the While House Office of National Drug Control Policy, spokesman Carney claimed that the White House drug control office does not have any authority to direct or supervise the law enforcement operations, including the NYPD Muslim surveillances.
"This is not an administration program or a White House program. This is the New York Police Department", Carney added.
Many secret programs built by the NYPD with the help of the CIA have been revealed by the AP in recent months. The said programs aim at monitoring entire Muslim neighborhoods and collecting information on the daily activities of American-Muslims or foreign Muslims residing in the US.
