Lavrov Welcomes Syria’s Referendum, Accuses West of Slowing Tehran-IAEA Cooperation
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed Monday Syria's holding a referendum on the new draft constitution describing the move as "a step toward achieving reform and democracy."
In a press conference in Moscow, he stressed that "holding referendum on a new draft constitution in Syria constitutes an important step towards reform and democracy"
Hailing "the end of a one-party rule," Lavrov called on all international powers to give a unified and clear sign to all Syria sides on the necessity of dialogue."
"All parties must sit around the table of dialogue to find solution to the crisis," he confirmed pointing to the necessity of "halting violence in the country by all parties."
Lavrov described the so-called "Friends of Syria" meeting held recently in Tunisia as "a meeting of unilateral support."
"To this day, we do not know the legal status of the document adopted by the meeting. We have an impression that this meeting didn't contribute to ensuring the circumstances to encourage all sides to hold political dialogue," he added.
On the Iranian front, the Russian top diplomat viewed that "Iran has every right to make use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes."
Lavrov criticized the West stands on Iran's nuclear program and said "it seems that certain countries try to slow down the pace of Iran-IAEA cooperation whenever Tehran voices readiness to cooperate with the agency."
