Oakland Police Arrests 500 Anti-Capitalism Protesters
Occupy protesters objecting to economic inequality gathered outside Oakland City Hall on Saturday and marched through the streets.
Tensions remained high in Oakland, California, as at least 500 anti-capitalism protesters were arrested in clashes between US police and Occupy Oakland protesters.
The Oakland turmoil was part of a weekend of developments in the Occupy movement across the US.
Riot police in Oakland fired smoke and teargas canisters at anti-corporatism
activists.
The unprecedented number of arrests, as the local police described the apprehensions on Sunday, was made over the past two days as the Occupy Oakland demonstrators displayed resilience to keep the protest action alive.
Police said some entered City Hall, a YMCA building and a vacant convention center.
The protest in Oakland is a part of the Occupy movement which was inspired by
the Occupy Wall Street campaign that began in New York in September, 2011.
Despite police crackdowns and mass arrests, the Occupy movement has now spread into many major US cities as well as to Australia, Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal and other countries.
At least 6,319 Occupy protesters have been apprehended since the start of the movement.
