Sarkozy: Strike against Iran Triggers War, Chaos in ME, World
French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned against any military intervention against Iran stating that a strike on Iran would "trigger war and chaos in the Middle East."
At his annual New Year's address to diplomats in Paris, Sarkozy warned that "a military intervention would not solve the problem of Iran's nuclear program but would trigger war and chaos in the Middle East and maybe the world."
France would "do everything to avoid a military intervention," he said, calling instead for "much stronger sanctions against Tehran."
Sarkozy's warning echoes similar remarks from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said this week that military action against Iran would be a "catastrophe and unleash regional war in the Middle East."
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi sought to soothe tensions, saying regional "peace and tranquility was in the interest of all."
The Iranian official also called neighboring states not to put themselves in a "dangerous position by aligning themselves too closely with the United States."
