Karzai Calls for Immediate Halt to US-Led Raids

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called for an immediate halt to the US-led NATO night attacks in war-ravaged Afghanistan.
Karzai's spokesman, Aimal Faizi, said on Tuesday that Karzai repeated his appeal to foreign troops to stop entering Afghan homes during nighttime operations.
"The president of Afghanistan wants an immediate halt to the night raids and house searches of Afghans," Faizi said.
The request came a day after NATO stressed that the US-led forces will continue nighttime attacks in Afghanistan despite widespread condemnation by the Afghan people and officials.
NATO spokesman Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson claimed that the kill-and-capture raids are needed to target militants.
However, Faizi stressed that President Karzai "doesn't want any foreigner to go to the homes of Afghans and search their homes."
The Afghan spokesman noted that the US-led raids are "in total contradiction to what the president of Afghanistan wants" and "will have a negative impact on the process of signing the strategic partnership document with the US."
The latest of such attacks were carried out three days ago, claiming the life of a pregnant woman and leaving four other civilians injured in Afghanistan's southeastern Paktia Province.
Civilian casualties caused by US-led foreign forces have triggered deep anger among Afghans, prompting demonstrations throughout the United States.
