Russia Says Will Respond to US Visa Restriction Step on Sergei Magnitsky Case
Reuters news agency reported Russian Foreign Ministry saying that the US visa restrictions on Russian officials linked to the death of hedge fund lawyer Sergei Magnitsky could become a "serious irritant" in bilateral relations and provoke a response from Moscow.
On Wednesday, a US State Department spokesman confirmed that his country imposed visa restrictions on some Russian officials believed to be involved in Magnitsky's death.
Spokesman Mark Toner stated, "We do issue visa restrictions on individuals around the world. In this specific case it was the individuals we believe are responsible for this death. The Magnitsky case has long been an issue of concern between us and Russia and we've raised it with them many times".
As a reaction to the aforementioned, the Russian Foreign Minister stated in a statement that "such actions could introduce a serious irritate to Russian-US relations".
The Ministry's statement further read, "We will not leave such unfriendly step unanswered and we will take adequate measures, protecting the sovereignty of our country and rights of Russian citizens against unjustified moved by foreign states".
