Yerevan: Police Station Hostage Crisis Continues, 2 Released

Local Editor

Two police officers earlier taken hostage in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, were released, Samson Galstyan, an official from National Security Service told TASS, adding that two more hostages remain in the police station.

The hostage crisis started on July 17 when an armed group in trucks rammed through the gates of a police station and took control of the building.

The hostage-takers killed one law enforcement officer and injured two others.

The attack was launched to demand the release of Armenian opposition figure Jirayr Sefilyan, who was detained last month after authorities allegedly uncovered a plot to seize several buildings and telecommunication facilities in Yerevan.
