A UN official renewed calls on "Israel" to lift its seven-year blockade on the Gaza Strip, saying the regime must stop the ‘collective punishment’ of the Palestinians in that area, according to the Middle East Monitor on Thursday.

In his first trip to Gaza on Thursday, the new Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency [UNRWA] for Palestine Refugees Pierre Krahenbuhl said the "Israeli" blockade on the Palestinian land "amounts to an illegal collective punishment."

Krahenbuhl said that he arrived in Gaza on Thursday not to travel there in order to get facts and numbers but to see, defend and show his solidarity with the refugees.

He pledged to defend Gaza and to work hard to end the blockade.
He noted that his first impression about Gaza was, "wires and separation wall."

He further said that all United Nations human rights reports, human rights organizations’ reports and journalistic reports could not reflect the continuous suffering and isolation of the Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip.
