Shots reportedly were fired on campus at a university in the US state of Michigan and the suspect is still at large, the school said Friday.

Shots Reportedly Fired at Michigan University, at Least 2 People Killed

At least two people were killed during the shooting, the University confirmed.

Central Michigan University said the two people killed at a campus dormitory were not students, but did not offer further details on their identities. There were no additional injuries, early reports suggest.

"Two individuals were fatally shot at Campbell Hall on campus this morning. The deceased are not students and police believe the situation started from a domestic situation," the university said in a statement.

"Campus is on lockdown as the suspect is still at large," the school said several hours after the incident occurred.

The university identified the suspected shooter as James Eric Davis, "a black male, approximately 19 years of age."

Police were scouring the campus and surrounding areas -- with helicopters overhead and officers searching on foot.

"There has been a report of shots fired at Campbell Hall on campus. Suspect is still at large, police advise all to take shelter," Central Michigan University said in an alert on its website and on Twitter.

City officials in Mount Pleasant, where the campus is located, said the suspect was a black male and considered "armed and dangerous."

The campus was on lockdown, classes canceled, and students were told to shelter in place, according to US media reports.

The shooting took place on the fourth floor of a campus dormitory, according to WDIV television.

The new shooting comes after a troubled teen gunned down 17 people at his former high school in Florida in February.
