In this respect, Russian president Vladimir Putin announced the daily "humanitarian pause" in fighting from 9am to 2pm to let civilians flee the area.

Meanwhile, the so-called ‘Syrian Observatory for Human Rights' said it had been largely calm in eastern Ghouta since midnight.

The Russian defense ministry said on Monday the measures, decided in agreement with Syrian forces, were intended to help civilians leave and to evacuate the sick and wounded.

Relatively, a UN Security Council resolution passed on Saturday had demanded a 30-day truce across Syria.

"Five hours is better than no hours, but we would like to see an end to all hostilities extended by 30 days, as stipulated by the security council," the UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said.

Eastern Ghouta is the last major stronghold near Damascus for militants in the country, who has driven insurgents from numerous areas backed by their allies.
