At least one building collapsed in what state broadcaster RTBF said was a gas explosion. The building used to house a pizza restaurant on the ground and residential apartments above.

In further details, Antwerp police spokesman Wouter Bruyns told VRT network: "There are about 10, a maximum 20 casualties, fortunately including many slightly injured."

The explosion ripped through the homes late in the evening. Meanwhile, Antwerp police quickly announced the blast was not related to terrorism.

Rescue workers were still going through the debris around midnight.

Photos posted by local residents on social media indicate all three buildings collapsed.

Belgium has been on high alert since deadly suicide bombings in 2016 and a wave of terrorist attacks across Europe.

Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever said on Twitter the city would support the victims.

"Our city has suffered a devastating explosion tonight," he wrote adding thanks to first responders. "The investigation will show what the circumstances were".
