Transparency International and its chapters expressed serious concern about the Government of Bahrain restricting the freedom of movement of Sayed Sharaf Almosawi, chair of the Bahrain Transparency Society, Transparency International's chapter in Bahrain, who was put under a travel ban for the second time this year.

Transparency International Urges Bahrain to Lift Travel Ban on Sharaf Almosawi

The ban prevented him from attending Transparency International's Annual Membership Meeting 2017, where the entire movement is meeting in Berlin between 12 and 15 October.

This crackdown on anti-corruption activists is inconsistent with commitments made by the Government of Bahrain, which signed the United Nations Convention against Corruption [UNCAC] in 2005 and ratified it in 2010.

Article 13 of the convention specifically promotes the active participation of civil society in the fight against corruption.

We ask the Government of Bahrain to immediately lift the travel ban on Sharaf Almousawi and reaffirm its commitment by guaranteeing the safety of those who speak out when they see corruption and injustice.

The statement signed by 48 chapters at Transparency International's Annual Membership Meeting in Berlin, 13 October 2017.
