A huge blaze has broken out near Southend Airport as a hangar goes on fire with a witness reporting an "explosion".

UK Airport Explosion: Firefighter Battle Blaze in Hangar

Essex firefighters were called to the hangar, which is used to livery planes, near the terminal shortly after 10.40am today.

Pictures quickly emerged on social media showing thick plumes of black smoke billowing above the airport.

It's thought there wasn't any aircraft inside the building at the time of the fire and the airport is still operating as normal.

Early reports from an eyewitness suggested they had heard an "explosion", while others denied hearing a bang.

An Essex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "When firefighters arrived at the scene they reported the large hangar, which is used to livery airplanes, was on fire.

"Six fire engines were requested to help tackle the fire.

"Firefighters are using an aerial ladder platform to pour water on the large building from above.

"The officer in charge at the incident reports crews are making good progress."

Staff say flights are continuing to operate and the airport remains open.

A Southend Airport spokeswoman said: "Essex Fire and Rescue is currently dealing with an incident at the Air Livery hanger on the north side of the airfield.

"London Southend Airport is still open and operating as normal".
