World Leaders Express Condolences on Ayat. Rafsanjani’s Departure

Following passing away of the late Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Sunday evening, a group of world leaders and officials sent various messages to express condolence to Iranian nation over the tragic event.

The messages described the late Ayatollah Rafsanjani as close ally to the late Imam Khomeini and Leader of the Islamic Revolution His Eminence Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei, describing him as among 'main pillars' of the Islamic Revolution.

Cuban President Raúl Castro in a message condoled President Hassan Rouhani on the demise of the late Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjan.

'During his political career, Ayatollah Rafsanjani contributed to establishing friendly and closer ties between Iran and Cuba and during his presidency, bilateral cooperation in scientific and trade fields started,' the message reads.

'As the Chairman of the Expediency Council, Ayatollah Rafsanjani hosted the late Cuban Revolutionary Leader Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz during his official trip to Iran in 2001,' Raúl Castro said.

The White House press secretary Josh Earnest also condoled the Iranian people and referred to Ayatollah Rafsanjani as a 'prominent figure' and a 'consequential figure' in Iran's history, said a report by the New York Times.

For his part, Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan voiced condolences to the Iranian people and government over the passing away of the Expediency Council chief.

He described the late Ayatollah as a distinguished figure in the Islamic Republic of Iran, in a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to Yerevan on Tuesday.

In a message to President Rouhani, President of the Ivory Coast Alassane Ouattara expressed sorrow on behalf of his people and government over the passing away of the ayatollah.

King Abdullah II of Jordan sent a message on Monday where he expressed condolences on behalf of his nation and country to the Iranian people and government on the departure of the late ayatollah.

According to the Petra News Agency of Jordan, he prayed for the peace of the soul of the deceased ayatollah.
For his part, Pakistani leader Sayyed Sajed Ali Naqavi called the late Ayatollah Rafsanjani as "scholar, thinker, researcher and genius of the age."

He wrote that the news concerning demise of the late Ayatollah deeply saddened the Pakistanis and made them regretful.
Also, Archbishop Grigore Chiftchia of the East Azarbaijan Province Armenian Kalif Council, in a message on Monday, offered condolences on demise of the late Ayatollah Rafsanjani.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun underlined that the late Ayatollah was always supportive to Lebanon and its integration.

General Aoun offered his condolences to the family of the late Ayatollah as well as Iranian nation.

South African President, Jacob Zuma, in a message on Monday wrote that ex-president of Iran was forerunner in establishment and expansion of politico-economic relations between Iran and African states, especially South Africa.

Zuma said South African nation shares grief with Iranian nation for the sad occasion.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani died on January 8 [Sunday] at the age of 82 due to a heart attack in a Tehran hospital.
