On Sunday, Chavez mocked Washington's move to send thousands of American soldiers to Haiti, describing them as "Marines armed as if they were going to war."

"Why send 3,000 armed soldiers unless it is for war?"

"It appears they are militarily occupying Haiti, taking advantage of the tragedy," he said during his weekly radio and television show "Alo Presidente."

The Pentagon has announced the deployment of 10,000 troops to Haiti, which the United States has occupied in the past.

The US has been accused of interfering in Haitian internal affairs in the past. The US military played a role in the departure of the former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide before his second term was over in early 2004. Aristide has described his departure as a kidnapping.
