Ten civilians, including eight schoolchildren, were killed in an attack by Western forces in Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai said Monday.
A "series of operations by international forces" resulted in the deaths, Mr. Karzai said in a statement. The incident happened in a remote part of the north-eastern province of Kunar, an insurgent hotbed.
"The president strongly condemns the operation which caused civilian deaths and has dispatched a delegation to investigate," the statement said. The deaths occurred Sunday in the Narang district of Kunar province, according to the statement.
The attack, which could be the worst since a U.S. raid earlier this month killed 13 people, triggered widespread condemnation and protests. Monday's announcement spurred a number of lawmakers to walk out of the Parliament in protest.
Civilian deaths in Afghanistan have been ongoing, at the time US president Barack Obama ordered more than 13,000 troops to Afghanistan.
