Lebanon is expected at the end of next September to be elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 64 session of the UN General Assembly. Thus, it is assumed to become one of the smallest Arab states members actually in this Council, starting from the beginning of next January, for a period of two years.

In this context, a senior diplomatic source, told Al-Nahar newspaper that "the Foreign ministry began a series of contacts and consultations with relevant countries on this level, in addition to notes sent to the Lebanese ambassadors abroad and particularly those adopted in the decision-making capitals, to urge them to provide the required support ".

The source stressed Lebanon's "certain victory", considering that the country has the support of the Arab League in this regard. This victory will open doors for Lebanon to be in the "heart of events" at the level of the formulation of decisions and participation in it, knowing that efforts are focused now on securing as many votes as possible.

The source said that "the non-permanent membership would allow Lebanon to participate in many important discussions, Lebanese issues and most importantly those related to the resolution 1701, as well as Arab, regional and international discussions."
