At least five people were martyred and over 30 others sustained injuries after a bomb went off near a Ashura procession of Shia Muslims in Pakistan's eastern Bahawalnagar district of Punjab province on Thursday, police said.

Police sources in the area added that women and children are among the injured in the blast that occurred near Jail Road area of the district, stating that the death toll might further rise as many of those injured are in critical condition.

Rescue teams, police and security forces reached the site and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital.

The annual commemoration mourns the 7th century death of Prophet Muhammad's grandson Imam Hussein [AS].

The remembrance of Imam Hussein is an emotional event that sees many believers weep over his death at the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq.
