Lebanon recorded 1,593 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths Wednesday, the Health Ministry reported.

The new numbers bring the aggregate to 576,550 cases and 7,958 deaths in Lebanon since the virus was first discovered in February 2020. Out of the latest figures, 10 were among travelers arriving in Lebanon.

A total of 25,230 tests were administered in the last 24 hours, resulting in an average two-week positivity rate of 7.8 percent.

The report also said that 412 people were in hospital with the virus, including 174 patients in intensive care and 30 on ventilators.

A total of 14,417 first-dose vaccine jabs were administered, as well as 17,126 second-dose jabs, resulting in a total of 1,032,340 individuals or 21.6 percent of the eligible population now fully vaccinated in Lebanon since the vaccination began six months ago.

Lebanon has been experiencing a new wave of the virus since the discovery of the Delta variant at the start of July. While normal activities have resumed for much of the population with many people disregarding social distancing, there has been a surge in cases. The government has announced that there might be a lockdown in September if the cases remain on the rise.
