Lebanon Registers 1478 New Coronavirus Cases, 27 More Deaths; To Go Under Easter Lockdown

Lebanon registered 1478 new coronavirus cases, and 27 more related deaths over the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the government imposed a new lockdown from May 1 until May 3 to slow the spread of the virus during Orthodox Easter weekend, and banned flights from India and Brazil where there is a new wave of the pandemic.

The recently registered cases were detected among 15,122 tests, with only eight cases found among travelers arriving at Rafik Hariri International Airport. The average positivity rate throughout the last two weeks stood at 11.5%.

The total number of cases since the virus was first detected in the country in February last year rose to 524,241 according to figures released by the Health Ministry. The total number of fatalities now stands at 7,224.

According to statistics provided by the Health Ministry, 1,343 patients are currently hospitalized for COVID-19 and related complications, with 601 in the ICU and 173 requiring ventilators.

The Health Ministry also reported that 7,678 first-stage jabs and 5,288 second-round vaccinations were administered in the past 24 hours, bringing the cumulative number of inoculations since the February 14 onset to 290,281 first-stage and 155,706 second-stage jabs so far.
