“Israeli” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party is on its way towards the opposition, Likud whip MK Miki Zohar stated after the faction was defeated in a Knesset vote on the formation of a key committee.

"We understand and we adopt the idea that we are headed in the direction of the opposition," he said during a meeting of the Knesset’s Arrangements Committee.

"Netanyahu will lead the opposition," he said, adding that "we will keep our heads held high."

Earlier in the evening, a key bill proposed to the Arrangements Committee, a key Knesset committee that controls the legislative agenda of the new parliament until a new government is formed, issued by Likud was rejected during a vote at the plenum.

The blocking of the bill essentially wrested control of the Knesset’s Arrangements Committee from Likud and now gives the so-called "change bloc" the power to determine the legislative agenda in the new parliament until a new government is formed.

The vote was won thanks to the support of the party Ra’am [United Arab List] led by MK Mansour Abbas.
