Lebanon registered 45 new coronavirus deaths and 2,008 cases, the Health Ministry said Friday, as a leading physician in the country against the pandemic warned of another hike in cases despite positive developments.

The cases were detected among 19,185 tests, with only 16 cases found among travelers arriving at Rafik Hariri International Airport. The average positivity rate throughout the last two weeks stood at 14.1 percent.

The total number of cases since the virus was first detected in the country on Feb. 21, 2020, rose to 506,808 according to figures released by the Health Ministry. The total number of fatalities now stands at 6,854.

The statistics provided by the Health Ministry also show that 1,748 patients are currently hospitalized for COVID-19 and related complications, with 791 in the ICU and 211 requiring ventilators.

Head of the Rafik Hariri University Hospital Dr. Firass Abiad earlier Friday noted that some positive developments have been registered regarding the coronavirus situation in Lebanon, such as the decrease in the test positivity rate and the number of patients being admitted to the ICU.

However, he warned of another spike since the positivity rate still remains over 10 percent and daily cases are still high as the government plans to further ease restrictions.

“The virus retains strong community presence. As we ease restrictions and open schools, a rebound in cases would not be surprising,” he said in a tweet.

Abiad also pointed that the vaccination drive in the country is slow largely due to a small supply of the jabs, calling for a faster rollout.
