The United Kingdom will not impose new lockdowns after June as the coronavirus will be treated like the seasonal flu, the England’s chief medical officer said Thursday as quoted by British media.

“It is clear we are going to have to manage it, at some point, rather like we manage the flu. Here is a seasonal, very dangerous disease that kills thousands of people and society has chosen a particular way around it,” Prof Chris Whitty said while answering questions during a webinar for the Royal Society of Medicine.

The public health expert noted that caution was still required, as new strains pose the main threat now that vaccines provide effective protection against the regular coronavirus.

Whitty, however, stressed the need to get back to normal, with “some balance which actually keeps [infections] at a low level, minimizes deaths as best we can, but in a way that the population tolerates, through medical countermeasures like vaccines and in due course drugs,” outlet City AM reported.

The expert added that the only scenario in which pulling the “alarm cord” will be required would be the emergence of a variant that was able to have “unconstrained growth,” according to outlet Manchester Evening News.

The chief medical officer, however, rejected the notion that new variants could be avoided, saying it is “not a realistic starting point.”
