Lebanon registered 51 more coronavirus-related deaths and 1,888 new cases Monday, as the country began easing lockdown restrictions ahead of schedule, despite warnings by experts that a ‘fourth wave’ may be imminent.

The cases were detected among 8,337 tests, with only 12 cases found among travelers arriving at Beirut International Airport. The positivity rate throughout the last two weeks stood at 17.9 percent.

The total number of cases since coronavirus was first identified in Lebanon on Feb. 21, 2020 now stands at 376,921, as per statistics released by the Health Ministry. The total number of fatalities has risen to 4,743.

The data provided by the Health Ministry also shows that 2,192 patients are currently hospitalized for COVID-19 and related complications, with 898 in the ICU and 276 requiring ventilators.

Backtracking from the initial plan to open various sectors of the country in a gradual process spanning over eight weeks, a ministerial committee last week took the decision to accelerate the process and end total lockdown prematurely. Malls, retail sector shops and supermarkets are now open, with plans to reopen schools starting March 8.

Officials said early Monday that 50,415 people have so far been vaccinated in Lebanon, with the number inevitably rising as inoculations took place throughout the day. It has also been confirmed that China late Monday donated 50,000 vaccines to Lebanon.
