The electronic platform to register for the coronavirus vaccine in Lebanon went live Thursday morning, as the country awaits the first shipment of the vaccine to kick-start a new phase in the battle against the pandemic.

The Lebanese Health Ministry launched the online platform for all those in Lebanon who wish to register to receive the coronavirus vaccine.

Caretaker Health Minister Hamad Hasan said he hopes people respond to the national vaccination plan and sign up to receive the jabs in order to help the country achieve herd immunity by the end of the year by helping reach the 80 percent target.

The vaccination drive isn’t restricted only to Lebanese as Palestinian and Syrian refugees are also eligible to sign up, in addition to people of other nationalities.

Medical workers and the elderly have been identified as the top priority to take the vaccine.

Lebanon has so far secured around 6 million doses of the vaccine, enough for 3 million people as two doses are required for the full effect, from different international pharmaceutical companies.

The first shipment of around 50,000 doses is expected to arrive in the first half of February from Pfizer-BioNTech.

Head of the parliamentary Health Committee MP Assem Araji encouraged everyone to take the vaccine. For those who are scared or skeptical, the MP said that the vaccine has no “dangerous” side-effects and reminded people to consume information from trusted medical sources.
