Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on Lebanese factions to unite against "Israel" as he met Lebanon's President Michel Suleiman on Tuesday, state television reported.
"The Islamic republic believes the capacity of all Lebanese groups must be used to reinforce the unity and strength of Lebanon to confront the danger of the Zionist regime," Khamenei said.
"Unity among Lebanese political and ethnic groups is the only way to progress in this country," Khamenei told Suleiman, who arrived on a two-day visit to Tehran on Monday.
The supreme leader praised Suleiman for "supporting the Islamic Resistance, his efforts to strengthen national unity and maintaining the national character of the Lebanese army."
Khamenei vowed that Iran would always stand by Lebanon and praised the "historic victory against the Zionist regime" in the 33-day war between Hizbullah and "Israel" in 2006.
"Over the past 60 years no Muslim and Arab countries have been able to stand against the Zionist regime but the Lebanese people managed to break this spell, by defeating and pushing out the Zionist army"" he added.
