For the second consecutive day, the so-called March 14 leaders continued firing at the "calming" atmosphere, launching assaults against "political rivals," and expressing openly "worries" of their "potential" defeat in the 2009 upcoming parliamentary elections.

Indeed, a few hours after the head of the Phalange Party former President Amin Gemayel transformed his son's assassination anniversary into a mere "political festival" and launched a vehement assault against the Resistance and its weapons, warning against voting in the favor of "Hizbullah and its allies" in the upcoming elections, came the turn of the head of the Democratic Gathering MP Walid Jumblatt to express his own reservations.

Jumblatt, who was able to visit Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir at Bkerki "thanks to the improvement of the situation following the May 7 incidents," talked about "successful political alliances or deals with the Patriarch" and warned against "losing the parliamentary elections."

The PSP leader, believed to be the "sponsor of calm," said that that the people of Lebanon were headed toward fateful elections. "If we succeeded in elections under the most dangerous circumstances, we can continue internal dialogue calmly in order to gradually assimilate the Resistance's arms," he declared. "But if we fail, Rustom Ghazali will not have to return to Beirut; he would govern Lebanon from Damascus," Jumblatt claimed.

Jumblatt, who recently returned from Washington, decided to anticipate comments on his new "change of speech," claiming that no one could accuse him of provoking upon his return from his US visit because, since his visit to the US in 2006, he has understood Washington's message.

This message, he said, was announced in 2006 by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice when she said that the Syrian regime should change its behavior. He added that the new administration wanted to reestablish engagement with Damascus, but, "I must warn that this regime is professional in talks for talks' sake, dialogue for dialogue's sake," he claimed.

Earlier, Jumblatt told Lebanese daily As-Safir that he was keeping his speeches calm, according to the Doha Agreement's recommendations. He said that he realized during his visit to Washington last week, that the United States' House of Representatives and Senate were still interested in March 14 alliance as an independent movement. He added that he emphasized the necessity of putting the occupied Shibaa Farms under the authority of the United Nations and announced that he might visit the US again to meet with President-elect Barack Obama's team.
