Lebanon registered Thursday a record 3,507 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours, as the caretaker health minister vowed the country would win its battle against the deadly virus.

Among the newly recorded cases, only 10 were from incoming travelers, bringing the total number of cases since the virus was first detected in late February to 181,503. Twelve virus-related deaths were also registered in the same 24-hour period, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,455.

Lebanon's previous highest number of cases in a single day was recorded Wednesday with 2,878.

A total of 23,848 PCR tests have been administered in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate of the tests in the last two weeks stood at 13.5 percent.

The Health Ministry said 1,133 cases were in hospitals with 458 patients in ICUs and 138 on mechanical ventilators.

Caretaker Health Minister Hamad Hassan urged New Year's Eve revelers to wear masks and social distance as he vowed the country would win its fight against COVID-19.

"Stick to [wearing] masks and social distancing ... Don't do away with all the sacrifices made merely a month and a half before the start of the vaccination campaign," Hassan was quoted by the state-run National News Agency.

The recent surge in cases have revived discussions on reimposing a total lockdown to rein in the spread of the virus. A decision is expected Monday, officials have said.
