Lebanon registered 14 new coronavirus-related deaths and 2,136 cases Friday, as Caretaker Health Minister Hamad Hasan announced that one new registered coronavirus case on a flight from Britain carried the new variant of the virus.

Hasan told local media that the newly recorded case was a Lebanese national who was currently quarantining in Tripoli and that the ministry had asked all passengers on that flight to take PCR tests and quarantine for 10 days.

Among the new cases, 26 were from travelers arriving from abroad, bringing the total number of cases in Lebanon since the virus was first detected in the country in late February to 168,069. The total number of deaths now stands at 1,367.

A total of 15,655 PCR tests have been administered in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate of the tests in the last two weeks stood at 13.4 percent.

The Health Ministry said that 1,070 were in hospital, with 421 patients in the ICU and 140 on ventilation.

Lebanon’s coronavirus cases surged Thursday, reaching 2,708 positive cases in 24 hours as health experts warn that the numbers would increase in the coming days if people do not comply with preventive measures during the holiday season.
