The Dow Jones index surged past 30,000 points for the first time Tuesday as receding United States political uncertainty and hopes for coronavirus vaccines offset worries over spiking Covid-19 cases.

Near 1710 GMT, the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1.6 percent to 30,077.77.

The broad-based S&P 500 also gained 1.5 percent to 3,631.28 while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 1.0 percent to 11,994.92.

Outgoing US President Donald Trump delivered a short-televised address following the Dow's record-breaking milestone, without referring to the presidential election or taking questions from reporters.

“I just want to congratulate everybody. The stock market, Dow Jones Industrial Average just hit 30,000, which is the highest in history,” Trump said, quoted by broadcaster CNBC.

“We’ve never broken 30,000, and that’s despite everything that’s taken place with the pandemic,” he added.
