Head of the parliamentary Health Committee MP Assem Araji said Monday that the coronavirus vaccine is not expected to reach Lebanon until spring next year.

“We do not expect to receive the coronavirus vaccine until March or April of next year,” Araji said in a statement.

Araji added that even after Lebanon receives the vaccine, people should keep on wearing their face masks as the virus needs time to completely wear out.

Caretaker Health Minister Hamad Hasan said in a statement that Lebanon had signed two agreements with the companies Pfizer and COVAX, and the vaccines sent will cover around 2 million persons in the country.

Hasan also said in a televised remarks that Lebanon had already received amounts of the medicine Remdesivir and they are set to be distributed to hospitals around the country.

With coronavirus cases being on the rise in the previous weeks, Lebanon Saturday entered its second full lockdown since the virus was first detected in February and is set to last until Nov. 30. The minister expects to see a decrease in cases by the end of this week.

“We expect to see results from the full lockdown through a decrease in coronavirus cases by the end of this week,” Hasan said.

Araji stressed that since the beginning of the lockdown people have been mostly adhering to the lockdown measures, and cases are expected to decrease if the people stay committed.

Lebanon had registered a total of 817 coronavirus-related deaths and 105,430 infections.
