Lebanon confirmed 1,534 new coronavirus cases and seven deaths Friday, as the head of Rafik Hariri Hospital Dr. Firass Abiad warned that stern preventive measures to stop the spread of the virus needed to be taken before it was too late.

A total of 559 people have died from coronavirus complications. A total of 242 patients have been admitted to ICU in the past 24 hours.

Abiad highlighted the need for hospitals, which are currently working at above 90 percent occupancy rate in many areas around Lebanon, to increase their capacity to receive patients.

Of the new cases, 74 were detected among incoming travelers. Abiad explained in a tweet that the increasing number of cases from arrivals was due to the significant rise in cases detected worldwide.

“It is clear that a large wave of infections is sweeping most of the countries of the world and may reach Lebanon,” Abiad said.

The total number of registered coronavirus cases in the country is now at 68,479. A total of 32,412 people have recovered from coronavirus, according to the Health Ministry’s report.

Since Monday, 79 villages and towns across Lebanon have been under lockdown, all of them having been identified as having more than eight positive COVID-19 cases registered per 100,000 people over the preceding 14 days.

Abiad said that the current strategy used to confront coronavirus in Lebanon excludes the option of a total closure. However, this strategy has consequences and should adapt to the very high number of cases that might hit Lebanon.
