Lebanon smashed its record for the highest daily rise in coronavirus cases Thursday, confirming 1,550 new infections despite having placed scores of villages under lockdown for more than a week and half.

The previous high tally was reached on October 7 when 1,459 cases were recorded. In another morbid development, Lebanon Thursday surpassed 500 deaths after two more people died from COVID-19-related complications.

The total number of reported cases in the crisis-hit country now stands at 58,648 infections and 501 deaths. There are currently 32,951 active cases in Lebanon.

Over the past 14 days, 10 percent of tests carried out on the local population have come back positive. Of the new cases Thursday, 79 were detected among people traveling into the country from abroad.

The death rate will undoubtedly rise if the current trajectory is maintained, particularly as coronavirus ICU wards are 94 percent full. There were 195 of 206 ICU beds occupied most recently.
