The number of coronavirus cases in Lebanon exceeded 30,000 Tuesday, with 851 additional people confirmed to have caught the disease.

Eight more people died from health complications caused by the virus, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in Lebanon to 315.

In total, 30,838 people in the country have caught coronavirus since it was first detected in the country on February 21.

Ten of the people who tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 24 hours had recently traveled into the country. The local test positivity stood at 8.4 percent, with 841 positive cases detected among 9,983 tests carried out on the resident population.

Inbound test positivity among the 2,001 tests carried out on travelers within the same period stood at 0.4 percent.

Relatively, caretaker Health Minister Dr. Hamad Hassan called Sunday for a two-week total lockdown to curb the transmission of the virus and ease pressure on hospitals. His proposal was however turned down Monday by the National Infectious Disease Committee and other members of the caretaker Cabinet. They said that other measures should be considered first and that a lockdown needed to be part of a more cohesive plan to stop the virus’ spread.
