Italy’s former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, announced Wednesday that he had tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, vowing to continue political activities regardless ahead of elections.

“Unfortunately, this too has happened to me,” Berlusconi’s staff quoted him saying after a video conference, “but I carry on fighting.”

At 83 years old, the controversial politician and billionaire media tycoon will continue to support candidates of his center-right Forzia party in local elections as he remains in isolation at his home in Arcore, north of Milan.

Italy was one of the earliest and hardest-hit countries after the coronavirus outbreak. Despite numbers having come under control, an increase has been recorded once again after the tourism industry restarted.

Politicians across the political spectrum wished the controversial figure a swift recovery, even staunch opponents.
