Lebanon registered 561 new coronavirus cases and one death Wednesday, as general mobilization regulations were extended until the end of the year and restaurants were allowed to reopen again.

Of the new cases, 557 were found among the local population and four among incoming travelers, bringing the tally of COVID-19 cases registered in Lebanon so far to 14,248. Cases were detected among 7,327 PCR tests administered in the last 24 hours.

One new death was confirmed, raising the total number of fatalities to 139.

Coronavirus cases detected among the local population surged in August, with 69% of all local cases recorded between August 1 and August 24. A total of 8,300 local cases were detected during that period, out of a total 12,039 since February 21.

The positivity rate among tests carried out on the local population stood at 6.6% in August. It stood at 0.82% in June and 2.14% in July.

The country is undergoing partial lockdown for two weeks in a bid to contain the alarming spike in coronavirus cases witnessed in the last month.

However, the food and beverage sector is set to reopen with 50% capacity and strict coronavirus prevention measures, after the tourism syndicates and the ministerial committee for combatting coronavirus came to an agreement Wednesday.

Meanwhile the Higher Defense Council extended the general mobilization period until the end of the year, marking the ninth extension since these measures were introduced in March, giving authorities the legal powers necessary to implement strict measures designed to contain the virus.

Caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab expressed concern regarding the public health situation in the country during the meeting.

“We are going through a delicate phase in the confrontation with coronavirus. The number of infections is rising in a way that suggests that if the rise continues, we will lose control of the epidemic,” he said.
